Teak & Cypress Ice Chest
These cooler chests are made from two in thick pieces of teak and locally sawn, air dried cypress. The coolers are custom fabricated to fit inside the chests and surrounded by over 4 inches of insulation and wood. This results in an efficient and attractive addition to any golf course, patio, lanai or large boat.
Mortise and tenon joints along with floating frame and panel construction were used to fabricate the chest. The seams around the panels were sealed with back teak decking caulk to ensure that moisture doesn't infiltrate the joint.
To fabricate the cooler I used 5/8" Azek, a PVC based material that is sold in sheets similar to plywood. It's easy to work with and totally waterproof, making it a great choice for this kind of application. Around the cooler, there is a layer of 1/2" blue insulation, 2" foil wrapped insulation, two layers of 3/4" foam insulation and a final outside layer of Reflectix bubble wrap insulation.
Preliminary tests show that the chests hold ice for over 48 hours (if undisturbed) and more real world experiments are around the corner. These can be made to virtually any size and in other combinations of wood, so please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in having one of these built for you.
