Golf Bag Rack
This rack is just over 8 feet long and is meant to hold 8 golf bags, although it could probably hold 12 or 15 if stacked properly. It is made from locally sawn cypress and reclaimed ipe. Cypress is used for the supporting structure and ipe for the parts that are going to take the most abuse.
"Ipe" refers to a number of trees in the Handroanthus genus that produce some of the hardest and strongest lumber commercially available. It is resistant to insects, mold, mildew, rotting and even fire, making it perfect for outdoor applications. It is a popular choice for decking and even high stress public boardwalks like the 2.5 mile, cypress marsh traversing Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary here in Naples and the famous, oft-trampled promenade at Coney Island.
The design for this piece developed over time first with some rough sketches then with more detailed planning. The cypress supports slant back at 10 degrees, as does the platform. The upper part or cradle, is made up of 31 individual pieces that involve various 10 and 20 degree angles, creating a snaking line that runs the length of the rack. Overall, I think it creates a very clean and modern look.
